We taste-tested Pizza Hut's very confusing hot dog pizza

Hot dogs don't exactly belong on pizza -- not in pizza crust, not on the pizza itself and not even on the same plate. But Pizza Hut went there: The Plano-based company announced a Hot Dog Pizza last week that officially goes on sale today, June 18, at Pizza Huts nationwide.

And in fact, the idea's catching on. People all over the country are making their own wacky combinations of #hotdogpizza. Even vegan ones.

Awful or awesome? Here's the verdict: This pizza was made for kids and drunk people.

It's the ultimate finger food because it requires plucking off hot dogs one by one -- and there are 28 of them in a large pizza. Then you're left with crustless pizza, which is weird for adults and a whole lot of fun for kids and kids-at-heart.

When adults at The Dallas Morning News taste-tested the Hot Dog Pizza (we didn't have any kids and or intoxicated people nearby, sorry), "I'm confused" seemed to be a common feeling initially. Do you eat the 'dog or the pizza first? Do you go dog-pizza-dog-pizza or all dog, then all pizza? We still don't know.

We decided hot dogs and pizza are an odd couple, but not so odd that we wouldn't do it again.

In fact, my grown-up adult colleagues launched into a conversation about what else we'd put in pizza crust if we could. What if Pizza Hut put cheese with them there 'dogs? Or maybe they could make the crusts into kolaches a la West, Texas. Kolache pizza! A million-dollar idea. Or at least a hundred.

One of our astute tasters surmised at the Hot Dog Pizza is probably awesome the next day, cold, for breakfast. Ditto late at night after one too many beers.

Get it for the kids table at the Fourth of July party, then enjoy leftovers after the kids go to bed.
