Packing for the holidays? Nintendo Switch lets you bring family game night along

OK, so let's say you've already got a Nintendo Switch, one of the hottest pieces of technology this year, and you're packing for the holidays. The Switch makes spending time with family even easier -- allowing you to bring your favorite board games, card games and more with you.

With the console's built-in screen and detachable controllers, it beats lugging around a box full of game pieces or a full-sized game console.

Monopoly for Nintendo Switch

Surely you've played Monopoly by now. You know, it's the game that everyone fights over and someone usually cheats during?

Well, hopefully Monopoly for Nintendo Switch can change that. This fully-featured suite of variations on the classic board game is the perfect package for tackling game night on the go -- and the best proof of concept for tabletop gaming on the Switch.

With up to six players, you can all sit around the Nintendo Switch's screen, each with a Joy Con controller in hand and play one of the three modes in the game. Shake the Joy Con to roll your dice, with HD Rumble making it feel like you're actually rolling dice.

Sure, it takes just a bit of the charm out of the board game, but there are no more physical pieces to lose, money to tear or bankers to swindle.

Monopoly for Nintendo Switch is available in stores and on the Nintendo eShop for $39.99.

1-2 Switch

1-2 Switch is not so much a game as it is a proof of concept, and it's a solid one at that. The package sports 28 different mini games and usually involves players standing across from each other. The games focus more on watching the other player than the screen, making for awkward, yet hilarious moments.

Games include Milk, a cow milking mini game, Soda Shake, where players take turns shaking a passing a bottle of soda until it explodes and Wizard, where all of your Harry Potter wizarding battle dreams will come true.

Each of the games takes advantage of the Switch's Joy Con controllers for gameplay, as well as its HD Rumble capabilities. Given the space needed to play, though, you probably don't want to play this one on the plane.

1-2 Switch is available in stores and on the Nintendo eShop for $49.99.

UNO

If Monopoly wasn't enough to get the family pumped for game night, then UNO might do the job. The Nintendo Switch version of the popular card game has modes for one to four players, including a solo mode, online play, a team-up 2 vs. 2 mode and the ability to connect with a second Nintendo Switch system for the complete UNO playing experience.

While this might not be the game to play all at once, it's the one to pass around. The game includes the classic UNO card deck, as well as sets inspired by Rayman, Rabbids and the Just Dance video game series.

The Jackbox Party Pack 4

We have to tell you up front: These games can get pretty wild. But rest assured, while the subject matter up front is not so great for kids, the game sports a manual censor, which means parents can hop into the game's settings and block the content not suitable for the younger folks.

The Jackbox Party Pack series of games bring the fun of game shows, word games and more to the Nintendo Switch. The game's hook, though, is that your smartphone is your controller. Keep in mind, though, this game requires a constant internet connection.

In Party Pack 4, games like Fibbage 3 and Fibbage: Enough About You will have you trying to fool your loved ones with fake facts, while Civic Doodle will pit you up against your relatives in a mural-drawing free-for-all.

Other packs in the series include games like Quiplash, where the goal is to give the funniest response to a prompt while up against another player, Tee K.O., which has you designing really messed up T-shirts and You Don't Know Jack, an updated version of the classic game show with timely questions and a prying narrator.

The Jackbox Party Pack and its three sequels are available on the Nintendo eShop for $24.99 each.

Puyo Puyo Tetris

Chances are, someone in your family has played Tetris before. This incredibly content-packed game brings together the classic puzzle games of Tetris and Puyo Puyo for a four-player battle royale game that's perfect for everyone.

Puyo Puyo Tetris allows for simultaneous play via split screen. While that might be a bit difficult on the Nintendo Switch screen, it's the perfect way to pass time on the plane, in the car or wherever else you may be.

Players can choose whether they want to play with Puyo Puyo pieces, Tetris blocks or a mix of both.

Of course, you can also play the game solo, and it has a fully-featured campaign mode that will make fans of both puzzle series very happy.

Puyo Puyo Tetris is available in stores and on the Nintendo eShop for $39.99.

Others

Looking for something extra for family game night? Well, there are plenty of other great multiplayer games available on the Switch.

For fans of arcade racing with up to four players, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a big hit, while Gear.Club Unlimited offers split-screen play for those looking for more of a racing simulator.

Want to keep things competitive? ARMS is a unique take on the fighting game genre that pits two players up against each other, while FIFA 18 and NBA 2K18 are portable versions of popular sports titles. Keep in mind, though, that the latter two require a consistent internet connection.

Finally, games like Snipperclips, Overcooked: Special Edition and LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 encourage teamwork with cooperative play, perfect for families on long road trips.
