Super NES Classic Edition pre-orders begin this month; Nintendo promises 'a significant amount' of systems

Ever since the announcement of the Super NES Classic -- a miniature game console containing more than 20 classic SNES games -- people have been plotting how to get their hands on one. There was a bit of a gold rush in July when pre-orders appeared to go live on Walmart's website, but those orders were eventually cancelled (Walmart blames a technical glitch for the purchase page going live ahead of schedule.)

The system is already highly coveted in part due to the scarcity of its predecessor, the NES Classic Edition. That retro console, which included old Nintendo hits including the original Super Mario Bros. and Legend of Zelda games, quickly became the must-have gift of the holiday season. It remained hard to find until its untimely cancellation.

So when can you pre-order a Super NES Classic to guarantee you get your hands on one? "Late this month," according to Nintendo.

Nintendo adds, "A significant amount of additional systems will be shipped to stores for launch day, and throughout the balance of the calendar year."
