Guide Geek: Everyone's talking about the 18 quintillion planets in 'No Man's Sky'

This week, most people who are into video games, and even many who are not, are talking about No Man's Sky, a game for PS4 and PC developed by English developer Hello Games.

It's an entire universe on a disk. There are more than 18 quintillion procedurally generated planets for you to explore. Just hop into your spaceship, pick a direction and fly. Even the game's developers aren't entirely sure what you'll find, because the landscape and wildlife of every planet could be different than the last. More than 10 million species of wildlife have already been discovered in the game, which is more than have been discovered on Earth.

You can gather resources. You can get into dog fights. You can scan wildlife and trade items and upgrade your ship. Some people had hoped that they would never have to buy another game again.

The problem? If you don't care about exploring, there's not a lot else for you to actually do. You can't build stuff like in Minecraft, and it's not a sci-fi epic like Mass Effect.

But if you just want to chill out and discover what wonders an algorithm might have created for you, No Man's Sky might keep you busy for at least a couple dozen hours, if not hundreds.
