Id Software's new ultra-violent 'Doom' will be released in May

The end of the world is in sight. Doom, in development at Richardson-based Id Software, now has a release date: May 13, 2016. The date was announced today by publisher Bethesda, who also announced that the game would come with a "Demon Multiplayer pack" as a pre-order bonus.

The original Doom helped pioneer the first-person shooter genre (along with another Id Software game, Wolfenstein 3D), but it's been more than 10 years since the last game in the series, Doom 3. This sequel, previously referred to as Doom 4, has reportedly had a very troubled development cycle.

A new trailer for the game released alongside the release date announcement is ... brutal. In a very violent, not safe for children kind of way. This is nothing new. Ever since the crowd at QuakeCon in Dallas got an exclusive early look at the game in 2014, we've known that Id Software would be pushing the envelope in terms of ways to horrifically slaughter demons.
