Nintendo wants your ideas for new Smash Bros. characters, so it's Simon Belmont's time

As part of this week's Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo has opened the floodgates to suggestions for new characters that could be added to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, meaning people can stop simply shouting on Twitter "Give us Goku in Smash!" and instead shout about it in a form that, in theory, someone at Nintendo will see someday.

"Do you want your favorite video-game character to join the battle in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U?" they say. "Well, here's your chance. If you post a video-game character's name, we'll consider turning that character into a Smash fighter! Please limit your vote to one per person."

I'm sure everybody out there has plenty of great ideas, and I've seen a few of them on social media. A few game developers themselves have even gotten in on it, encouraging their fans to vote for their own creations.

But let's be real for a second: There's one old school video game icon that's perfect for Super Smash Bros., and its about time he's had his time to shine.

It's time to put Simon Belmont into Smash.

Making his first Nintendo appearance in 1986, Simon took on the forces of Dracula multiple times on the NES and SNES, Castlevania was a recognizable enough series for Nintendo that Simon was a main character in the animated series Captain N: The Game Master alongside the likes of Kid Icarus, Mega Man and Samus (all of whom are already in Smash).

So he's played a major role in Nintendo's history, but the things he's known for are already perfect for their fighting game series.

He's got an iconic weapon -- the Vampire Killer whip -- that could make for an interesting basic moveset, and it can be great for an aerial recovery move (Castlevania IV established that he can be used to latch onto things and swing from them, making it good for grabbing onto the ledges of Smash levels), But Castlevania is also known for its variety of sub-weapons. His axe can be tossed in an arc above him. His cross can be thrown like a boomerang to the sides. His holy water can be used for opponents up close. You've more or less got a complete set of Smash moves right there.

Furthermore, Nintendo has already successfully worked with Konami to get one of their characters into the game -- Solid Snake in Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii.

The ballot for new Super Smash Bros. characters can be found at Nintendo's official website. You can vote for whoever you want. I won't stop you for nominating Aero the Acro-Bat if that's your thing. But you know in your heart of hearts that there's one right answer here, and it's Simon Belmont.
