Play This: If you missed it before, DmC Devil May Cry's Definitive Edition is worth your time

DmC Devil May Cry is a great action game that I don't think enough people played.

It occupied kind of a weird position as a series reboot. A new developer (Ninja Theory) took the reigns of the Devil May Cry franchise and immediately alienated a lot of fans with their new interpretation of series protagonist Dante. Younger, more sarcastic and, sure, more of a "pretty boy." It was a direction a lot of people didn't like from the get-go.

But if you ask me, those people missed out. But they have another chance to play it, now that the Definitive Edition of the game is hitting the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. They'll even have gifts waiting for them in the form of additional content, including a mew Hardcore Mode that plays more like the original Devil May Cry games and a character skin modeled after classic Dante.

If you've never played a Devil May Cry game before, this is a good place to start. DmC is a fantastic action game in the same vein as games like God of War or Bayonetta, complete with an over-the-top and totally ridiculous style. Some moments get serious, but for the most part the action and the story beats are pretty crazy -- in a good way.

But what makes DmC really great is the combat, which feels good with just about every button press. There's a lot of variety in the attacks you can use, and you're able to chain them all together fluidly thanks to good controls.

While the game won't win any awards for best-looking game of the year at this point, the graphics have been improved nicely over the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game. More importantly, the game runs at a pretty steady 60fps, so all the action is as smooth as you want it to be.

I can't give you a very good rundown of the smaller changes to the beat-by-beat action because, frankly, that's a level of action game skill that is above me. But as a somewhat more casual fan of the series (having finished every game except DMC2), I'm just happy for an excuse to play through DmC again with a fresh coat of paint.
