Rock Band 4 finally announced, coming to PS4, Xbox One this year

Get your plastic instruments out of storage, because Harmonix is getting the band back together.

The company that popularized the video game guitar revolution just announced Rock Band 4, coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year.

The best part? All (or at least most of) that music you bought for the older games can come along with you. "In addition to a killer on-disc soundtrack," the announcement says, "Rock Band 4 will support over 2000 tracks released since the 2007 launch of the original Rock Band, accounting for more than 500 of rock music's most legendary artists." You can use your purchased songs in the new game free of charge, but the catch is that you'll have to wait for Harmonix to bring it over to the new systems, which won't all happen at once.

Being on a new generation of consoles means they're making new hardware, but Harmonix is working hard to make sure your old stuff works with the new game -- sans the keyboard and pro guitar, which are not coming back.

But even if you're going to upgrade to new instruments you can give your old guitars one last hurrah with some free Rock Band 3 DLC that was just released: "I Still Believe" by UK-based songwriter Frank Turner.

"With Rock Band 4, we're doubling down on the energy and excitement of playing music live with your friends," Harmonix CEO Steve Janiak said in a press release. "Focusing on the core experience that our fans have told us they love allows us to evolve established gameplay in meaningful ways that we can't wait to share with everyone later this year."
