Which of your favorite TV shows got the axe this season?

Fox went through its schedule like Jason with a scythe last week.

On Friday (natch), the network canceled Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Mick, Last Man on Earth, Lucifer and The Exorcist.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine did not deserve that fate. It is such a good comedy, with stellar turns by Andre Braugher as the captain of a police precinct inhabited by a core group of detectives led by Andy Samberg's successful Jake Peralta, who is firmly stuck in adolescence. It's also one of the most diverse shows on television; the show never shied away from bumping into stereotypes and dismantling them with laughs.

Each character at the precinct is fully inhabited by the actors -- including Terry Crews and Chelsea Peretti -- that portray them, making it some good, fun TV that engenders fervent fandom. Even Samberg: Sorry, not sorry. [Whispers] He can be off-putting. That fandom quickly expressed its displeasure via social media.

But wait. Do you hear that? Brooklyn Nine-Nine was rescued within a day by NBC.  Whew. That was close. It turns out that NBC is owned by Universal, which in turn owns the studio that makes the show. And it's not every day that a hit comedy that's actually good gets dropped into your lap. Talk about a plot twist.

But, here's the thing. It's gotten better, but networks pull the plug so quickly that many shows don't have time to get into a rhythm, or even find its people. (Ahem. Firefly.)

Many shows don't even get the five seasons that were afforded to the Nine-Nine. Instead of throwing pasta (or TV stars in this case) against the wall to see what sticks, perhaps it's time to let a show marinate. And, again, find its people.

Fox is the network this time, but the carnage is such that you can replace this slate of canceled shows with another set at another network at any time.

When you live in a world in which all that's old is new again -- I'm looking at you, reboots (from Roseanne to Will & Grace) and revivals (such as Last Man Standing) -- you just allow the same conversations to be had over and over again. So, here's to a new classic. Nine-Nine, I salute you. For at least one more season.

And, CW? ... #SaveLucifer.
