In honor of Dr. King, TBAAL annual civil rights concert will air on TV again on April 8

The Black Academy of Arts and Letters 35th annual Music and the Civil Rights Movement Concert will air at 7 p.m. April 8 on TXA 21.

The event is held every January in celebration of the national holiday dedicated to slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. The concert was held this year on Jan. 14 at the Meyerson Symphony Center and aired on the TXA 21 and CBS 11 in February.

Rahsaan Patterson and B. Slade performed at the event, along with a 200-voice choir, dancers and spoken-word artists. TBAAL founder Curtis King produced the program. The 2017 broadcast won a Lone Star Emmy.

The children of actors-authors-playwrights-soldiers for justice Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee -- Nora Dee-Davis, Dr. Hasna Muhammad and Guy Davis -- attended the event to make a presentation to TBAAL. Davis and Dee worked alongside Dr. King during the civil rights movement.

The repeat viewing is in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Dr. King's murder, which was on April 4, 1968.
