Forget the Super Bowl, the best reason to watch NBC Sunday night is 'This Is Us'

The show has won multiple Emmy and Golden Globe awards, and critics say Sunday's episode will provide viewers a long-awaited signature moment

For loyal fans of the Dallas Cowboys, Sunday's Philadelphia-New England Super Bowl calls to mind Henry Kissinger's famous line about the Iran-Iraq war: "It's a shame they both can't lose."

Nowadays, though, the game itself is almost secondary to watching television on Super Bowl Sunday. It long ago morphed into advertising's Super Bowl as well, with landmark (and costly) commercials prepped and primed for that day only. But this year, there's an even bigger reason to watch: NBC is airing the game, which will precede what critics say may be the signature episode of its best series in years, This Is Us, which has won multiple Emmy and Golden Globe awards. Finally, we learn how and why series patriarch Jack Pearson, played by Milo Ventimiglia, will meet his demise.
