WFAA anchor fires back after complaint about her appearance goes viral

Demetria Obilor, Traffic Ensemble Anchor for WFAA in Dallas, is going viral on social media after a viewer criticized the way she dressed on air.

Obilor joined the WFAA Daybreak team in late October.

In a screenshot of a Facebook comment making the rounds on Twitter, WFAA viewer Jan Shedd says she is "not going to watch Channel 8 anymore" because of the way Obilor dresses. "Has anyone seen Channel 8's new morning traffic reporter?" the post reads. "Her name is Demetria Obilor & she's a size 16/18 woman in a size 6 dress and she looks ridiculous. I understand that when I watch Channel 8 I'm going to get biased reporting and political correctness, but clearly they have taken complete leave of their senses."

The screenshot was already picking up social media steam on Friday, but it got a big boost from music star Chance the Rapper when he retweeted it.

While we haven't independently found Shedd's original post, she did publish a follow-up:

"I recently put a post about the way a lady on Channel 8 dressed, who happened to be black. Frankly, I didn't even notice that she was black. I was shocked that Channel 8 would put someone on the air that dressed so provocatively. The racist mafia did not appreciate the criticism and now they are harassing me. I just blocked about 50 of them. I will continue to block as time allows. If you happen to notice any of their posts, just ignore them. I don't know them and they don't know me."

How has Obilor taking the criticism? With some fire of her own. In a video posted to Twitter in which she addressed "the haters," Obilor says, "This is the way that I'm built. This is the way I was born. I'm not going anywhere, so if you don't like it, you have your options."

She continued, "Now, to the people who show love: I love you right back."

Harsh criticism of the way TV personalities -- especially women --  look on camera is unfortunately all too common on the internet. In fact, Shedd's post about Obilor's clothing was not the only one posted to WFAA's Facebook page. But in this case, at least, Obilor seems to have plenty of people rushing to her defense.
