See the first trailer for 'Waco,' a series about cult leader David Koresh

Many Texans know the city of Waco for plenty of normal and/or positive reasons. It's the home of Baylor, Dr Pepper and Fixer Upper. Many people elsewhere in the world, however, associate Waco with one very specific figure: David Koresh.

Specifically, they tend to think of the deadly siege at Koresh's Branch Davidian compound in 1993. Spoilers if you don't know your history: During the 51-day standoff with the ATF and FBI, 76 people died, including some children.

That tragedy and the events that led up to it are the subject of an upcoming six-part series called Waco, starring Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) as Koresh and Melissa Benoist (Supergirl) as his wife Rachel Koresh. The show also stars Michael Shannon and John Leguizamo. The Paramount Network released the first minute-and-a-half trailer on Tuesday.

The show premieres on the Paramount Network in January. If you're asking, "What the heck is the Paramount Network?" don't worry -- it doesn't technically exist yet. It will be the new name for Spike TV beginning Jan. 18, when the channel will be re-branded as "a premium entertainment destination that pushed the limits of storytelling with bold original scripted and non-scripted series." It will debut with a live one-hour episode of Lip Sync Battle.

Wondering how much the stars look like their real-life counterparts? Here's an old image of David and Rachel Koresh:
