5 TV shows with ties to Dallas, including the obvious and the not-so-obvious

Some of the fascination most people outside of the Metroplex have with our fair city begins and ends with the night-time TV soap opera Dallas, original recipe.

That was then.

But Dallas remains a hot property when it comes to moving pictures. Shows may come and go, but here are five you can catch that have Dallas on the brain.

'The Real Housewives of Dallas'

It's purportedly about the lifestyles of the rich and shameless right here in North Texas. The newest iteration of Andy Cohen's Real Housewives franchise is in the midst of a hard-won second season. Get up to speed on where they go and what they do right here every week, and see if you can recognize your Dallas. The show airs Monday nights at 9.

'Queen of the South'

If Housewives purports to be about glitz and glamour in Dallas and Fort Worth, then Queen of the South is its down-and-gritty cousin. This show follows the upward trajectory and eventual fall of Teresa Mendoza, who is grabbing at the crown of a drug ring based in Dallas. The show skulks around shadowy underpasses and parking lots, but you can feel the bumpy city streets as they rush through them. The second season just ended on USA; it will surely join the first season on Netflix as the show was renewed for a third season in August.

'Midnight, Texas'

One of the heroes in this supernatural series starts his journey in Dallas, working out of a high rise as a medium. At the behest of his dead grandmother, he ends up leaving town for another place in Texas. There is an actual angel and demons, among other fantastical beings that populate this small town called Midnight. That sounds a lot like Dallas, too, am I right? "A special two-night event" airs Monday, Sept. 11, and Wednesday, Sept. 13, with the series finale scheduled for Monday, Sept. 18, on NBC. You can also catch up on Hulu.

'The Gifted'

The pilot was shot in Dallas, in some of the places we like to say are our favorites, such as Deep Ellum. One of more than a few series drawn from Marvel series (see what I did there?), the show is about teenagers who show their mutant abilities and must go on the run with their family, presumably through Dallas. SMU alum Amy Acker (Angel, Person of Interest) plays the mother, and Stephen Moyer (True Blood) plays the father who is part of a government agency that tracks and detains mutants. The drama will premiere Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. on Fox.

'Raven's Home'

Raven-Symone (black-ish) returns to her own series with this reboot of That's So Raven. She's all grown up in Raven's Home, married and divorced and raising two children with the help of her live-in best friend Chelsea (Anneliese van der Pol) and Chelsea's son, Levi. But this time, she's not the only one who can glimpse the future. Raven and her ex-husband are amicably co-parenting until he gets a job as a morning weatherman in --  you guessed it -- Dallas. The show airs new episodes at 7 p.m. Fridays on Disney Channel.
