Dallas' Iliza Shlesinger lands late-night show on Freeform

Freeform, the cable and satellite channel formerly known as ABC Family, just booked its first late-night show: Truth & Iliza. It will be hosted by Dallas-raised comedian Iliza Shlesinger. The half-hour weekly show will launch Tuesday, May 2.

Six episodes have been ordered so far for what Variety calls a "test for the show." More can be ordered if it performs well.

Deadline quotes Shlesinger as saying, "I'm so grateful to Freeform for inviting me to create a show that occupies a space between social commentary, politics, pop culture and my specific brand of comedy and feminism. This show will inform, entertain, and it's a great excuse to get a spray tan."

They say each episode of the show will "center on a themed question that the host will try to answer using audience interaction, field pieces, commentary and, of course, jokes."

Shlesinger will serve as an executive producer on Truth & Iliza. When Variety asked about the show last year (when it was still in development), she said, "Well, I'm a woman, so that automatically sets it apart from almost every other late night show [laughs]. I have the comedic chops and intelligence to raise points and discuss both sides of whatever is on our mind as a society. Basically? I'm really good at saying what other people are thinking and making it relatable."

Hot off the heels of her third Netflix special, Confirmed Kills, and a stand-up tour that came through Dallas, Shlesinger is also preparing season two of her web series Forever 31, which is available on ABCd. Like most of her comedy, Forever 31 is based on real events that have happened in the comedian's life.

Her first book, Girl Logic, is also scheduled to be released this fall.
