'The Walking Dead' and 'The Strain' continue with the pain, and the rest of the week on TV

Negan took a bat to viewers' emotions this past week on The Walking Dead.

(It's not lost on me that his bat is named Lucille, the same name of B.B. King's venerable guitar, but I digress.)

As did the Master's minions on The Strain. They were rushing beloved head strain fighter in charge Justine Feraldo, her steadfast sergeant, Frank and our heart, Angel, when everything went up in flames.

I'm working on a theme here. There's more coming up this week.

News Roundups

Catch up on the day's news you need to know.

Or with:

Walking Dead is only beginning its season. Now, with barely enough time to have caught breath from last week, the group finds what they think is sanctuary. Again. The show will return Sunday at 8 p.m. on AMC.

On The Strain, The Master reveals his new body and one can only hope the Master plan is revealed, too, in the season finale Sunday at 9 p.m. on FX. After the losses last week, Gus is on his own, and Eph and Dutch think they have a plan. But whither Eichhorst?

So many loose ends, only one hour and one season to go. The next season of The Strain will be the last, so it has to be good. Right?

This week in home entertainment

Adam West and Burt Ward are back as Batman and Robin in Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, out this week on Blu-ray and DVD.

Stop your fidgeting; it's animated and they're both in fine voice. And with Julie Newmar returning as Catwoman, there's fun to be had as the storied rogue's gallery comes together to take over Gotham.

DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation have managed to merge new-school animation with old-school shenanigans to make a delightfully pun-filled new feature-length film.

It's good enough to warrant a sequel in which another actor with a patented cadence joins the cast in a bit of inspired casting: William Shatner as Two-Face.

A selected list of what's also out this week: Anthropoid; Bad Moms; Doctor Who: The Christmas Specials; Hell on Wheels: The Complete Series; Imperium; The Librarians: The Complete First Season; My Little Pony Equestria Girls: The Legend of Everfree; Nine Lives; Outlander: Season Two; Paw Patrol: Pups Save Christmas; The Sea of Trees; Shaun the Sheep: We Wish Ewe A Merry Christmas; Snoopy, Come Home/A Boy Named Charlie Brown; Star Trek Beyond; Uncle Nick; and Venture Bros.: Seasons 1-6.
