Weekly Watcher: Comic adaptation 'Preacher' is bloody -- and a bit of awesome

Dominic Cooper (Agent Carter) plays a different kind of hero in Preacher, which premiered May 22 on AMC at 9 p.m.

Known for years as Howard Stark in the Marvel television universe, Cooper steps into the DC/Vertigo comic universe as Jesse Custer. Custer's a preacher in a small, dusty West Texas town, and he's having a crisis of faith and a few other things. As the old folks might say, something takes hold of him and now he's on the hunt for God. Literally. But he has help: his ex-girlfriend Tulip (Ruth Negga, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and a wanderer (read: bloodsucker) named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun, Misfits).

The comic has many fans of its bloody violence and profane depictions of, well, everything anyone has ever held sacred. That's the obligatory parental sticker. This adaptation, at long last from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, will have plenty, too.
