Fox gives green light to latest '24' reboot

It was just a couple years ago that Jack Bauer got to live another day. Soon, we'll get to see his legacy.

Fox announced Wednesday that it has given a series order to 24: Legacy, the latest reboot of the gritty real-time thrillerThis time, though, Kiefer Sutherland won't be reprising his role as the iconic counter-terrorism agent ("dammit!"). He'll instead move behind the camera as one of the show's executive producers.

Since Sutherland is sitting out this round, returning viewers will be greeted by a whole new cast.

Corey Hawkins of Straight Outta Compton fame is set to star, with Miranda Otto (Homeland) and Jimmy Smits (Sons of Anarchy) also confirmed as having roles.

Besides Sutherland, other returning 24 veterans are executive producer Brian Grazer, writers and executive producers Manny Coto and Evan Katz, and director and executive producer Stephen Hopkins.

As if the show could be anything else,  Legacy will chronicle fast-paced race against time to protect the United States from a devastating terrorist attack. The show will employ the same real-time format that made the original series stand out when it premiered in 2001, although Fox didn't say if the reboot would have a 24-episode season.

This is the second time Fox has tried to reboot the series. 24: Live Another Day made a 12-episode run back in 2014. Sutherland did reprise his role for that series, as did Mary Lynn Rajskub (as computer wiz Chloe O'Brian) and several other actors. It's unclear if any of those or other familiar faces will grace this latest incarnation of the series.

24: Legacy will debut sometime in the 2016-2017 season.
