The CW has cast Betty and Jughead for its Archie Comics series 'Riverdale'

Riverdale has found its first two residents: Betty Cooper and Jughead Jones. Betty will be played by Surviving Jack's Lili Reinhart while The Suite Life of Zack & Cody star Cole Sprouse will be the lovable wise-cracking friend who always wears a crown for some reason, Jughead.

The two are the first announced cast members for Riverdale, an upcoming CW series based on the popular Archie Comics series and named after the town in which those classic stories take place. It's a present-day take on the story that, according to Deadline, will explore some of the "darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale's wholesome facade."

In the series, Jughead isn't Archie's hungry best friend. He's "a heartthrob with a philosophical bent and former best friend of Archie Andrews. He is still smarting from the rift that took place between the two."

Casting notes for Betty, meanwhile, peg her as a "silver-tongued stunner" who has a crush on her best friend Archie.
