'Sharknado 3' leaves the fate of another sequel up to social media

Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! premiered Wednesday night on the Syfy network, and it was everything it was supposed to be -- implausible, dripping with cameos, lots of product placement and built for social media.

Spoiler alert: The fate of a Sharknado 4 might not only depend on ratings but a hashtag battle. In one of the final scenes, we see Fin's wife, April, who had just given birth inside a shark that was plummeting to Earth from outer space (don't ask), about to be mashed by space debris. Whether she lives depends on social media. (You can vote via hashtag (#aprillives or #aprildies) or click here. There were no other details. )

Presumably, the success of the second sequel depends on a third sequel. But Sharknado doesn't always follow convention.

Results aren't in, but star Ian Ziering tweeted late Wednesday that the show received 2.1 billion Twitter impressions. A year ago, Syfy announced that the sequel, Sharknado 2: The Second One, brought in 1 billion estimated Twitter impressions.
