Japanese animation may be something you usually enjoy from your home sofa or occasional movie theater, but AnimeFest transforms the pop culture phenomenon into living color. Founded in 1992, this annual not-for-profit convention in Dallas draws about 11,000 fans each year to enjoy cosplay (including a runway walk), panels, dance contests, make-up and sewing workshops, games and more. Special guests include academic experts, creative writers, YouTubers, and voice actors, producers and directors. See the full list of guests and programming online, and check out the dress code, prop weapons policy, autograph etiquette and other important convention rules while you’re there.

Fans of anime, manga, games and related pop culture can indulge in four days of non-stop activities, Aug. 16-19. Expect panels, cosplay contests, arcades, dance parties, board and arcade games, workshops and photo shoots. This year's theme is Pirates.

You must purchase a membership to attend AnimeFest. Single day memberships available online or at the door.
