DFW South Asian Film Festival - Opening Night at Highland Park Village Theatre
Shannon Sutlief Recommends
This annual festival highlighting North Texas’ growing South Asian community opens Feb. 8 with two films about women going against cultural norms: Mehram, a short film about a woman who makes a pilgrimage to Mecca without a male blood relative as required, and What Will People Say, a feature about a rebelling teenager sent from Norway to Pakistan to learn more about her family’s culture. More than a dozen other features, shorts and documentaries, some accompanied by actor and director appearances, will be shown the next three days. Stories of big dreams, small communities, fitting in, rebelling against, and love and loss will fill theater screens. The lineup includes special-interest programming, including family films on Feb. 11 and a block of LGBTQ stories on Feb. 10.
The festival continues Feb. 9-11 with screenings of more than 20 shorts, docs and features at the AMC Village on the Parkway in Addison and after parties at nearby venues.
