Imagine Dragons at American Airlines Center
Darryl Smyers Recommends
Las Vegas’ Imagine Dragons are the opposite of critical darlings. Although all three of the band’s albums have charted highly (with 2012 debut Night Visions as the breakthrough), the response from music writers has been decidedly mixed. That’s too bad, because Imagine Dragons are a consummate pop-rock outfit. Vocalist Dan Reynolds over-emotes at just the right moments while guitarist Wayne Sermon pumps out crunchy riffs that turn hits such as “Radioactive” and “Demons” into instantly hummable, radio-friendly fare. While certainly not overly original, Imagine Dragons ply their craft in an industry where innovation is rarely rewarded. What the band achieves in the pop-culture void is fairly impressive, as each successive release, including this year’s Evolve, has shown growth and maturity.
