25th Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition

Jan 13, 2017

Continuing the tradition of honoring the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, 4th and 5th grade students in Dallas will deliver original speeches between 3 to 5 minutes answering the question: “If Dr. King were alive today, what would he say about Muhammad Ali’s contribution to society?”

Approximately 162 students representing 25 Dallas ISD schools participated in the in-school competitions held in the fall. One student from each participating school was selected to advance to the semifinal round to be held on Dec. 8 at the Dallas ISD Headquarters Auditorium. Of the 25 students, 8 will advance to the final competition.

Criteria for judging include delivery, stage presence, and content interpretation and memorization at all three competition levels. The event is free and open to the public.

Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP continues to host and sponsor the 2017 competition, which this year features a total of 25 Dallas ISD schools in celebration of its 25th year. Participating Dallas ISD schools include: Amelia Earhart Learning Center, Arcadia Park, César Chávez Learning Center, Charles Rice Learning Center, Clara Oliver, Ebby Halliday, Edward Titche, Frederick Douglass, Harry C.
