7 reasons to head for Lewisville, including a drive-in, tacos and fun on the lake

Lewisville isn't the most well-known city in Dallas-Fort Worth. But if you take the time, you'll discover a cool drive-in theater, a scenic lake and plenty of delicious restaurants. Here are seven gems in Lewisville that you don't want to miss.

Eat at Tierney's Cafe & Tavern

Tierney's is a good place for any meal, but I recommend going for breakfast, when the options include flavorful omelets such as the Lewisville Fighting Farmer (with sauteed onions, potatoes, cheese and ham). There are also great weekly specials. If you visit during lunch or dinner, the chicken fried chicken with mac and cheese and mashed potatoes never disappoints. Tierney's has a welcoming staff and a homey feel, plus there's plenty of history behind the Victorian-style building: It was originally the home of Dr. J.W. Kennedy in 1885. If the weather's nice, you might want to grab a seat on the outdoor patio.

See a double feature at Coyote Drive-In

A new location of the Coyote Drive-In chain has been a blessing for locals who don't want to go far from home for a drive-in movie experience (Texas' other Coyote location is in Fort Worth). The screens here are huge, and there are plenty of spots to either watch the movies in your car or outside with a blanket and lawn chairs. Best of all, you get to see two newly released films for no more than $8, which is a rarity for even one film these days. Make a whole evening out of it by first stopping by the Coyote Canteen and ordering some dinner and snacks.

If you're looking to step outside of the breweries and wineries and try something new, Witherspoon Distillery is a real bang for your buck. Try its small-batch whiskies and rums, or even its cocktails. There's plenty to drink and see on the tour. (Be sure to check Groupon for possible tour deals.)

Visit Lewisville Lake and Sneaky Pete's

There is plenty to do at Lewisville Lake. For starters, there are picnic tables and grills around the lake, in case you're looking to cook out and take a shallow dip. If you want to go deeper into the water, Just for Fun Watercraft Rental is one spot to rent ski boats, WaveRunners and even party boats. But, hands down, the hottest spot to go to when visiting Lake Lewisville is Sneaky Pete's. It's like you're walking into a huge beach party. Sneaky Pete's has sand volleyball courts, a giant pool deck, and food and drinks to enjoy in the beautiful lake setting.

Watch a game at Drunken Donkey

It's always fun to grab a group of your friends and watch a big game at a lively bar, but good food is always an extra incentive. Drunken Donkey's eclectic menu features salads, burgers, wings and much more (my favorite is the chicken nachos). Be sure to pair your meal with one of the 50-plus craft beers on tap. And the Drunken Donkey has big screen TV's surrounding the whole bar, so there's not a bad seat in the house.

Shop around at Castle Hills Village Shops & Plaza

Castle Hills Village Shops & Plaza is a beautiful shopping center, even if you're just walking around and window shopping. Parents can give their kids a break from shopping with a trip to the interactive water fountain. And when you get hungry, choose from Kanzi Sushi & Hibachi, Chinese spot Z's Wok, pizza spot Pie 3.14 and more. Castle Hills also hosts plenty of free family-friendly events, such as a Fall Festival, the Holiday in the Plaza and Art & Wine Walk events.

Try the tacos at Martinez Grill & Taqueria

Hole-in-the-wall Tex-Mex spot Martinez Grill & Taqueria is a true hidden gem. Most people have no idea how good the tacos are there. Don't be thrown off by the plain interior appearance at the convenient, locally-owned restaurant near downtown Lewisville. The portions are generous and you get complementary chips and salsa. Expect tacos, quesadillas and burritos, plus some burgers and sandwiches if you're not feeling the Tex-Mex.
