Donald Trump loves McDonald's. Can Whataburger win over Melania?

Donald Trump loves McDonald's. Can Whataburger win over Melania?

The first and second ladies of the United States made a pit stop at the beloved Texas fast-food chain on Wednesday after surveying South Texas to see how it's recovering from Hurricane Harvey.

Melania Trump and Karen Pence loaded boxes for the Coastal Bend Food Bank inside a leaking warehouse in Corpus Christi. Then their motorcade rolled into the parking lot at the Whataburger on South Padre Island Drive.

A photo by a White House employee shows Trump and Pence at the counter, before Whataburger's extensive menu. Would it be a classic Whataburger, or the chicken strip meal, or perhaps a bolder choice, like the limited-time-only Chorizo Burger?

We don't know. Stephanie Grisham, the first lady's spokeswoman, didn't tweet what Trump and Pence ordered, but the first and second ladies bought French fries for the journalists in the press pool.

As for the president, let the record reflect that he's partial to McDonald's, specifically to Big Macs, Filet-O-Fish sandwiches and the chocolate shake -- all at once, according to a book by his former campaign manager and a top aide.

The Whataburger stop at about 2:40 p.m. was the end of a whirlwind trip to Texas for the first and second ladies, who landed in Corpus Christi at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Trump and Pence, along with Texas first lady Cecilia Abbott and the state's Land Commissioner George P. Bush, greeted first responders and military personnel, according to a pool reporter from the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. Then the officials headed to Rockport to meet with a family whose home was destroyed by Harvey.

"I am so impressed by your positive attitudes and resilient spirit, and look forward to the progress you will make as you rebuild your home and make new memories," Trump said, according to the pool reporter.

Trump and Pence also visited an elementary school in Aransas Pass before ending their tour at the food bank. After grabbing some Whataburger, the first and second ladies got on a plane back to Washington, D.C.
