How to get free Fletcher's corny dogs at the State Fair of Texas

You don't go to the State Fair of Texas and bypass Fletcher's Original State Fair Corny Dogs stand. You just don't.

In honor of the longtime Texas company's 75th birthday, you may not even have to pay for your battered 'n fried 'dog. Every Friday of the State Fair of Texas, Fletcher's is giving away free corny dogs to its first 75 customers. Fletcher's has seven stands at the state fair, and each stand is honoring the freebie for 75 people.

Mark it down: Those Fridays are Sept. 29, Oct. 6, Oct. 13 and Oct. 20. Concession booths open at 10 a.m.

If you're a serious fan, you can also go inside the Tower building and snap a photo with the Fletcher's mural, which celebrates its 75 years in business. We declared Fletcher's corny dogs one of the 4 essential State Fair of Texas foods.

Notably, it'll be the family's first State Fair of Texas without Neil "Skip" Fletcher, Jr., the jovial grandaddy of the family business who died in early 2017. Fletcher was known for telling frank jokes. Like this one:

"There's 100 ways you can screw up a corny dog," he told me in 2015.  "My thing is, corny dogs are simple but they ain't easy."

Fletcher's batter recipe still remains a family secret. In addition to the traditional corny dog and a jalapeno cheese variety the Fletchers sell, concession booths now also sell turkey corny dogs and a meatless veggie corny dog.
