Important State Fair news: Big Tex is a 'Pokemon Go' gym

Forget about whether or not the fried food is good. Ignore tips on how to get cheap water. I know what you really want to know about this year's State Fair of Texas:

What's the Pokemon Go situation like?

In terms of stuff to catch, nothing is really different — though with the amount of people gathered at the State Fair, it can be a perfect time to get together and drop some lures at the various Pokestops in Fair Park (which include the Tower Building and the Dancing Musical Fountains). And of course, you should make sure you're incubating some eggs, because you're going to be walking around a lot.

But the most important thing to note, in my humble opinion, is that Big Tex himself is a gym.

Gyms are, of course, scattered in abundance all around the world. There's one right outside the Dallas Morning News building (which, as it happens, is the only gym I've been able to successfully take over with the help of a colleague). But there's a lot of pride in taking over some specific, high-profile gyms.

"My friends and I took over Big Tex," you can say. "We own him now. I've got a pretty high-level Gyarados on him."

When the GuideLive staff visited the Fair on opening day, I was ill-equipped to wrest control of Big Tex from Team Valor. The level three gym was guarded by, among other things, a Dragonite with a CP of 3026.

If you want to wage a digital war over a Dallas location, though, the best spot this month is probably a giant animatronic cowboy. You won't even look weird playing Pokemon Go at Big Tex's feet. Everybody there is taking selfies anyway.
