Funnel cake beer returns to Dallas just in time for the State Fair of Texas

Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect current details for 2017.

The State Fair of Texas kicks off Friday, Sept. 29, and while there are plenty of crazy fried treats to try, few can deny the allure of a classic funnel cake. Or if you're a beer drinker, the classic Funnel Cake Ale.

The Funnel Cake Ale made its fair debut in 2014, when it won "Most Creative" of the eight fried food finalists in the Big Tex Choice Awards. Concessionaire Justin Martinez worked with brewers at Community Beer Co. to enter the summer ale, which tastes strikingly like its eponymous fair favorite thanks to the more than $1,000 of vanilla put into it.

Funnel Cake Ale returns to the State Fair of Texas this year where it will be served on draft with a powdered sugar rim (seriously, it's the best). But if you can't make it to Fair Park between Sept. 29 and Oct. 22, you're in luck.

Community Beer Co. is also distributing the beer in cans and on draft throughout the region in mid-September.

That means you can pick up a six-pack at the grocery store and bring the essence of the fair into the comfort of your home. Funnel Cake Ale will also be available on draft at select bars in Dallas-Fort Worth. Prices vary per venue, but on average customers can expect to pay $5 for a pint and $8-$9 for a six-pack, which leaves plenty of pocket change for powdered sugar.
