Keep it to your selfie: State Fair of Texas bans selfie sticks

Hey, fairgoers: For the love of Big Tex, leave your selfie sticks at home.

That's the word from State Fair of Texas officials as the event prepares to begin its three-and-a-half-week run at Fair Park starting Friday.

"There've been instances at other venues where people have taken them on rides," said Rusty Fitzgerald, the fair's vice-president of operations. "They become a safety issue."

In banning selfie sticks, monopods and similar contraptions, the fair joins a growing number of amusement parks and public venues that have made similar restrictions. Both Disney and Six Flags Over Texas banned selfie sticks from their theme parks earlier this year.

"Due to safety concerns, we have decided to follow suit," said State Fair of Texas president Mitchell Glieber.

Officials made the announcement Tuesday at a press conference held to discuss the event's safety measures and new attractions.

Any such items found onsite would be confiscated, with offenders risking the possibility of ejection from the grounds, they said. Routine bag checks will be conducted near State Fair entrances.

Dallas Police Deputy Chief Scott Walton, who will be supervising the uniformed and plainclothes officers assigned to the fair, said officers will be stationed at each entry gate and monitor fair parking lots.

They'll also help control traffic "so you can get to the fair as quickly as possible," he said.
