Jamie Benn’s stellar 5-hole goal highlights wild first period in Stars-Golden Knights Game 1

Three goals in the final four minutes of the first period. Playoff hockey is back.

Players and fans alike might need to catch their breath after the first period of Game 1.

The Dallas Stars and Golden Knights started off their playoff rematch with a wild 20 minutes that ended with the Stars trailing 3-2, which is a better score for Dallas than it looked like it would be at points.

Dallas fell into a 2-0 hole early after goals by Vegas’ Mark Stone and Jonathan Marchessault. Dallas looked to have struck back shortly after the first of those, but a replay review negated what would have been a game-tying goal. Safe to say it was less than an ideal start for the Stars.

Stars captain Jamie Benn found himself streaking alone after a feeder pass from Wyatt Johnston, and the 34-year-old veteran faked a big forehand move before tucking it neatly between the legs of Knights goalie Logan Thompson with his backhand. The goal put Dallas on the board with their first goal of the playoffs.

Shortly after that Vegas struck again for a 3-1 lead, but Jason Robertson struck back 38 seconds later to keep the Stars within one goal.

Three goals, all in the final four minutes of the first period. Welcome back to playoff hockey.
