Veteran lefty reliever exercises escape clause, leaves Texas Rangers organization

Chasen Shreve, 33, had a 2.61 ERA in 10 games at Triple-A after failing to make the Rangers’ roster.

ARLINGTON - Veteran left-handed reliever Chasen Shreve, who didn’t appear to be in the Texas Rangers’ plans after a disappointing spring, exercised his opt-out from Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday and became a free agent.

Shreve, 33, had a 2.61 ERA in 10 games for the Express after failing to make the Rangers’ roster. Shreve, who signed a minor league deal ahead of spring training, has pitched in the majors in each of the 10 previous seasons, compiling a 3.97 ERA over 367 games with seven different clubs. There simply didn’t seem to be opportunity for Shreve with the Rangers.

The Rangers had carried lefties Brock Burke and Jacob Latz into the regular season, but Burke was placed on the IL after punching a door following a poor outing in Houston. The Rangers have since acquired Kolton Ingram on a waiver claim. Also, lefty Antoine Kelly, who had a very impressive spring training is closing in on a return from an early-season shoulder injury.
