Here’s why Scottie Scheffler decided to celebrate at Inwood Tavern after his Masters win

Scheffler explained the timeline of his return to Dallas, why his wife Meredith and friends chose the local bar and the upcoming baby.

On Sunday, Dallas’ Scottie Scheffler took home his second Masters victory in just his fifth appearance at Augusta National.

Scheffler, No. 1 in the World Golf Ranking, is used to being at the top of leaderboards, but he is less used to spending time publicly celebrating his achievements.

At his media availability before this week’s RBC Heritage, the Highland Park product touched on why, after returning to Dallas on Sunday night, his close circle decided to celebrate his second green jacket with a trip to one of Dallas’ oldest bars Inwood Tavern.

On the details behind a picture of him in a tavern: “I don’t really frequent [Inwood Tavern] very often. I don’t know if I’d actually been to that place before. There was another tavern around the corner that I’d been to a few times and it’s a nice place, but shockingly it wasn’t open Sunday at 1:30 in the morning. This place was open. So on the plane ride home, I was with my manager Blake and my coach Randy and then I had four of my good buddies with me. I don’t remember who suggested it, but it seemed like a good idea, and when Meredith picked us up at the airport it still seemed like a good idea, and Meredith was down, so we went for probably 20 minutes and went home. Took a few photos, had a drink and then went home and went to bed.”

Why he finally celebrated a little bit after being known not to: “Yeah, that’s a good question. I think part of how I felt Sunday morning was I wished that I didn’t want to win as badly as I did. I wanted to win that tournament really badly for a number of reasons. I wanted to put the green jacket back on. I wanted to be able to have that plane ride home with the jacket, us all having fun. It’s kind of weird living through those times in your life where you dreamt about having moments like that and then all of a sudden they’re happening. So Sunday was really fun just to have some good friends and celebrate and enjoy the moment. Those are guys that we’ve walked through a lot of stuff over the last eight to ten years or so, and so it was very special, all of us getting to be together and celebrating something great happening together.”

On whether it was actually 20 minutes spent in the bar: “We were in the plane together for a while, but yeah, that was more for Meredith, and then it was like, okay, it closes at 2:00. I think Meredith finished her Heineken Zero and it was like, now we can go”

The impact that having a child will have on his schedule between now and the PGA Championship: “Yeah, do the best I can. I’ll be spending a bit more time at home preparing, but I’ll obviously take a break when the baby comes. We’ll see. I don’t know what life looks like. But up until when the baby comes, I’m going to play this week and then I’ll go home and basically just wait. We’re due at the end of the month. We’ll see when the baby comes. I don’t know. Like I said last week, golf never was my top priority, but I do love competing, and I put in the work. It’s going to take another notch down in priority when our child comes .My family still comes first, and we’ll see how the prep work goes.”

On how his wife Meredith is doing: “Last week I felt like the story got blown up a bit too much. That’s why I feel like I don’t really talk about my personal life very much just because then I have to answer questions in here about it. It’s just a bit different. But yeah, no signs. No signs of early labor anything like that. But she’s feeling good. Very tired but feeling good, and I’m sure she’s probably getting pretty close to having that baby.”
