Michael Irvin: Cowboys need to work toward a ‘dynasty’ if Dallas signs Odell Beckham, Jr.

Dallas will be the third organization to meet with the free agent wide receiver when Beckham comes for his scheduled meeting with the Cowboys on Dec. 5.

Pro Football Hall of Famer and Cowboys legend Michael Irvin recently joined Shan and RJ on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM] to discuss if the airplane situation with Odell Beckham Jr. should worry the Cowboys and what kind of communication the free agent wide receiver would have with Dak Prescott.

Here are some highlights, edited for clarity:

Is it true that you said, if the Cowboys get Odell Beckham, Jr. then Dallas needs to set it up for a dynasty?

Michael Irvin: You get Odell, this year, and I don’t know what that deal will look like, you hold on to Odell. You got a young Michael Parsons, you got a good, young defense. There’s a lot of young talent. You’ve got Dak Prescott with at least another five, six, seven years left. You have a good, stacked team. You got a good young offensive line. We haven’t even talked about Tyron Smith coming back, because that line has done a pretty good job. Yeah, you can start working towards a dynasty, something that can combat and battle that thing I said is growing and growing in Philadelphia earlier this summer. You can combat that if you get Odell.

Or with:

The Cowboys will be the third team to meet with Odell Beckham Jr., does it worry you that he may not even meet with Dallas?

Irvin: No, no, no because anyone who says here’s the money and say don’t leave the building, those teams don’t usually say don’t leave the building or we’re going to take the whole bag off the table. It doesn’t work that way. Secondly, Odell has always had a desire to play in Dallas. He’s got family here in Dallas. I talked to him about this a couple of times. At times when it was impossible to get him here to Dallas, we talked about it. So no, I don’t think that anybody can make him miss that meeting with you.

Following the airplane incident with Odell this weekend, does it worry you?

No, no, no, because it sounds like so many things. Like, I don’t fly private. I’m afraid to fly privately. And even as much as I fly, when we hit turbulence, that poor fella next to me is getting the arm grab. It’s so funny, because when I sit down, you can see him sneaking his camera out texting everybody, snapping shots sitting next to me all. He’s so excited. We hit them turbulence and I grab his arm with my strong hands and he’s like, “Oh my God! Wait a minute, I’m in the wrong seat. I don’t want to sit next to Michael Irvin no more.”

So I don’t know. When I saw my son play at Clemson against Wisconsin, and I had to be on air the next morning, on Sunday morning.I took a private jet, I had to take something to go to try to go to sleep. Wake me up when we get to LA. Do not touch me, you know? So I don’t know if Odell is like that or whatever. But obviously they said they were concerned about his health, but that’s what I would do sometimes when I fly. I take some just to try to go to sleep so I’m not concerned about anything. I don’t think that was a problem, he didn’t get arrested. It’s just a dust up.

It seems that there have been communication or chemistry issues since Dak Prescott returned from injury, would that be an issue if OBJ joined the Cowboys?

Irvin: Well, no. There’s only one thing you worry or be concerned about, let’s not abort the game plan to fit Odell. Let’s make a plan to integrate him properly. No doubt we use the talent. No doubt we use the gifts. But we got to have the right kind of integration. And Odell is going to want the right kind of integration. Now you’re seeing Michael Gallup take a hold of his position. After starting the season, you know, with a lot of doubt in his mind. Now, the last couple games, I see Michael Gallup going in, handling those little slant routes, and catching a slant route not worried about anybody around his ankle. He’s integrated back into the office so we can do it with Odell also.
