Why Chip and Joanna's (and Fixer Upper's) exit matters to viewers

Maybe this is why it felt as if a rush was on to establish other shows like Fixer Upper?

Waco couple Chip and Joanna Gaines were thisclose to being on a one-name basis with America, whether you care about fixing up houses or not. I mean, really, some people have a hard enough time fixing up one corner of the bathroom.

But in September 2017, the couple announced via their blog that Fixer Upper will end after its fifth season. And spinoff Behind the Design will be soon after.

"It is with both sadness and expectation that we share the news that season 5 of Fixer Upper will be our last," they wrote.

This is how you go out, near the top of your game. And face it, we'll always have reruns...

The show received its first Emmy nomination this past year and even though it lost out to Shark Tank for outstanding structured reality program, they really were just happy and surprised to be nominated.

All together, now. "Awwww."

Let's look at it this way. Now, they get to have a farewell TV tour and viewers get to go to each and every stop. And HGTV, the show's home, got it started off right, titling a blog post "We Love Chip and Jo," even counting the ways and pinning the tweet that leads you to the countdown.

A pinned tweet from a network? Now, that's love.

So much love. This couple drew in enough people that they were on the cover of big magazines, such as People. They drew in enough people that gossip websites and magazines even went so far as to speculate about their relationship, which kept checking the "married" box despite any big headlines you might have read.

And this one thing, perhaps above all else ... While everyone else is left making all sorts of statements through scripted and unscripted shows, Chip and Joanna were making just one: Fix it.

OK, a few more: love, family, pets, Texas.

They write that they still plan to renovate and design and write and build and love Waco. In fact, according to them, nothing will end except the show: "We are just getting started," they write.

And there's something to love about the simplicity in that.

Fare thee well, Mr. and Mrs. Gaines. Whatever you do, people will still be watching.
