Is Dallas really the rudest city in Texas? New (laughable) survey says so

Every year at the State Fair of Texas, the first thing Big Tex does is welcome patrons with a billowing "Howdy, folks!" As Dallasites, we think of this as a tangible expression of Southern hospitality, which we practice all year long. But apparently that message doesn't resonate with people who visit.

Dallas was voted the rudest city in Texas in a recent poll by Travel and Leisure magazine, staking claim as the No. 8 ill-tempered metro in America behind Boston, Salt Lake City, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, New York City, Phoenix and Miami. Miami took tops honors as the country's rudest city.

The real kicker? Houston didn't even crack the top 15.

The list of rudest U.S. cities was just one of several to come of Travel and Leisure's eighth annual "America's Favorite Places" survey, which polled readers on various aspects for city life from food and drink to culture and style.

So what exactly about Dallas rubbed visitors the wrong way?

"Even with a healthy dose of Texas twang, Dallas didn't come across to visitors as being very welcoming. What did resonate with travelers in the Big D were the city's bars and barbecue, including brisket omelets for breakfast at Smoke or craft brews in Deep Ellum," says the pub.

"Maybe travelers just don't get what they expect from a trip to Dallas."

So Dallas isn't all big hair and oil money anymore? Imagine that! Sorry visitors, but sounds like your Haterade is expired. Here are a few real reasons you might see the tawdry side of Big D.

Road rage is real thing

All of our highways are under construction and many of our commutes are long. So yeah, you might need to hold your own on the road (or for Pete's sake get in the right lane). But it's not fault the economy is booming and everyone wants to move here.

Our football team is better than yours

Oh wait, no it's not. But damn it if we're going to stop gloating (and pouting) about the Dallas Cowboys. America's Team y'all!

The Real Housewives of Dallas are embarrassing

You think their poop jokes are bad? So do we.

Fort Worth is way too nice

In fact, North Texas' western city was voted the No. 7 friendliest city in America by the same Travel and Leisure readers. Last year, Cowtown was also named among the country's most underrated cities. According to Travel and Leisure, Houston came in No. 2 and San Antonio topped the list as America's friendliest city. (And for the record, we think this poll is a bunch of cow pie.)

Summers are hellacious

If you really want to catch a mean mug in Big D, stop by June through August when the weather has everyone's panties in a twist. We dare you.
