Some genius in Austin replaced street sign to honor David Bowie

There are plenty of events around Dallas-Fort Worth commemorating David Bowie, but Austin took it one step further.

Someone at the capital replaced the sign for Bowie Street near Fifth Street with one that says "David Bowie Street," according to Austin360. The British music icon died Monday after a battle with cancer.

Austin360 reports the change was not sanctioned by the city (despite the above tweet) and there's no word yet on who the intrepid genius is. The pub notes the sign change happened near South By Southwest's offices in downtown, though the company claims no responsibility for it.

"We appreciate Austin's reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World and recognize David Bowie for all he did for the music industry and more. To this end, we will leave the sign up until Tuesday, January 19, so our community can enjoy the makeshift memorial a few days longer. At that time we will have to replace it with the real street name sign," said the city in a statement.

The street may actually named for James Bowie, a Texas revolutionary who died at the Battle of the Alamo, says Austin360. Though there are no records that officially say who the street is named for, according to an archivist it spoke with. There is a petition circulating to make the change permanent.
