Dallas' 'Dr. Death' tops the podcast charts

If you're squeamish, you may struggle to get through the first episode of Dr. Death. (I did.) If you have a strong sense of moral outrage, you'll find it impossible to quit listening.

This new six-episode podcast from Wondery, the creators of last year's hit, Dirty John, and freelance journalist Laura Beil (a former Dallas Morning News medical reporter) dropped last week and immediately topped the Apple Podcasts chart.

The show tracks the nightmare case of Dr. Christopher Duntsch, a Dallas-based neurosurgeon who went on a botched surgery spree that left multiple patients maimed — even partially paralyzed — and two dead.

The News reported extensively on the case and that link will take you to a special collection of those stories. In particular, I recommend starting with former staffer Doug Swanson's terrific piece: "A colleague called him a sociopath and a 'clear and present danger' to patients. Another doctor compared him to a serial killer."

The network is releasing one episode a week through early October.

It's a chilling show that will be hard for locals to miss: Wondery says it will be touting the show next week on a billboard across from Baylor Regional Medical Center in Plano where Duntsch once worked.
