The Volstead Room
Outside: An old-school phone booth to one side of a family-friendly restaurant called Prohibition Chicken.
Inside: A dimly lit bar with simple furniture and photos evoking 1920s America, when Prohibition, via the Volstead Act, gave rise to an illicit speakeasy movement. Thankfully, the quality of today's booze is much better than the bathtub gin of days past, so dial zero at the phone booth and enter the present, where you can revel in the moment with one of Ryan Jenkins' Old-Fashioned spins like the I Do What I Want, built with rye, agave nectar, cherry and black walnut bitters, and served in a glass smoked on a cherry plank.
Open 5:30 p.m. "to close" Thursday through Sunday at 201 W. Church St., Lewisville.
Bourbon & Banter
Outside: A wood-paneled wall opposite a phone booth in the subterranean level of the Statler hotel.
Inside: A den of mirrored swank, open nightly, where Kyle Hilla's playful cocktails keep a mix of hotel guests and locals entertained. On weekends, it's more of a club, but the time to go is on a weeknight, when you can punch a code on the adjacent phone and swing that wood-paneled wall open yourself for hairstyle-themed creations like the Pompadour, a variation on an Old-Fashioned whose brûlée cap requires the tap of a small hammer (provided) to enjoy.
