1 dead, 4 injured after driver crashes into DART train in South Dallas, officials say

Michael Kelly, 67, was killed in the collision after crashing into the train Monday evening.

One person is dead and four people injured after a driver crashed into a DART train Monday evening in Dallas, officials said.

A southbound Green Line train was just reaching the Metropolitan Avenue grade crossing a bit before 7 p.m. when the crash occurred, said Jeamy Molina, a DART spokeswoman. According to Molina, warning lights were flashing, and the crossing gate was down.

The motorist, she said, went around the gate and hit the train. Four people on the train suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene, Molina said.

The driver was taken to Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas with what appeared to be serious injuries. A Dallas County medical examiner’s report said he died late Monday.

The motorist was identified as 67-year-old Michael Kelly, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Molina urged the public to remember the importance of being safe around train tracks and “watching our signals and crossing arms being down.”
