What happened?

At about 6:20 p.m., Dallas police responded to a crash in the 6600 block of North Central Expressway. Officers determined that two people, one in a Chevrolet Corvette and one in a Lamborghini, were speeding in the far left lane near University Boulevard. The motorists lost control and the Lamborghini Urus SUV hit the center median wall, “causing a chain reaction collision involving four other vehicles,” according to Dallas police.

The occupants of the Urus and Corvette walked away from the scene without providing their information or stopping to see if anyone needed medical help, police said.

Information from the arrest warrant affidavit said the drivers of the Urus and Corvette were respectively traveling 119 mph and 116 mph moments before the collision. The speed limit is 70 mph on that stretch of highway.

Footage from a nearby motorist’s dashcam shows the two cars speeding in the left lane before striking a van and sedan as well as other vehicles. A report from the Texas Department of Transportation also detailed how the crash occurred.

Was anyone injured?

Two motorists involved in the accident were treated at the scene for minor injuries, a police spokesperson told The News. Two others were taken to a hospital for minor injuries, police said.

The couple taken to the hospital retained an attorney and have since filed a lawsuit. The woman has a “significant laceration” above her left eye that required multiple stitches; she and her husband have post-concussion symptoms.

At least one other victim of the crash has also retained legal counsel.

How is Rashee Rice involved?

The lawyer representing Rice, State Sen. Royce West, said at an April 4 news conference that Rice was driving the Lamborghini in the collision. Charges were issued by Dallas police just shy of a week later, with Rice facing one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury, police said.

Rice turned himself in to Glenn Heights police on April 11 and promptly bonded out.

Before the charges were filed, Rice met with Dallas police and released a written statement taking “full responsibility” for his part in the crash. Rice was connected to both vehicles — he had rented the Urus and the Corvette was registered or leased to him, officials have said.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid say they are letting the “law enforcement part of it take place” and then the Chiefs will “go from there,” regarding the charges Rice is facing.

Does Rice have Dallas connections?

Rice moved to Texas in the third grade and stayed in the area through high school. He lived in North Richland Hills and played on the Richland High School football team. He attended Southern Methodist University and became one of the most successful wide receivers in Mustang history, leading the nation his senior year in receiving yards per game.

Following his successful college career, the Kansas City Chiefs drafted Rice in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He won a Super Bowl with the team in February.

Will anyone else face charges?

Southern Methodist University player Theodore “Teddy” Knox was named as the driver of the Corvette by Dallas police when charges were announced. Knox faces the same eight charges as Rice. Knox also turned himself over to police and bonded out.

Knox was suspended from the SMU football team the day after the charges were announced.

Police said the passengers in the Corvette and Urus will not face charges.

Per Texas legal code, the person operating the vehicle is required to stop, assist other drivers if anyone is injured, share their information and notify police when a collision could result in injury or vehicles are not able to be safely driven. The statute does not appear to lay out any duties for passengers, and uninvolved lawyers have told The News they are not aware of any specific duties for passengers after a collision.
