ACL Fest headliners Mumford and Sons announce first Dallas date in three years

It doesn't seem like that long ago when the banjo-plucking, suspender-sporting British crew known as Mumford and Sons performed inside the tiny Cambridge Room at the House of Blues in Dallas. Not only was that almost a decade ago, but that sweaty, packed June 2010 show offered an explosive taste of what was to come for Marcus Mumford and his band as they would shoot from indie-powered folk-rockers into arena-filling, global headliners in rather short order.

In May, the band was announced as one of the primary acts for this year's ACL Festival, along with Guns 'N Roses, Tame Impala and the Cure. To make the most of their Texas swing, the band will be performing in Dallas on Oct. 9 at the American Airlines Center. The Dallas date falls in between the two ACL weekends, which should help any Mumford fanatics make their decision as to whether or not another trip to Austin is quite worth it or not.

When the group made its commercial breakthrough back in 2010, they were the poster boys for a possibly too-sincere brand of folk music that found a large audience thanks to its faster tempos and ocean-sized anthem choruses that helped pave the way for other folk-tastic acts like the Lumineers and the Head and the Heart, who would make their big splash soon thereafter.

After winning the Grammy for Album of the Year for their 2012 LP Babel, the band took a stylistic left turn with its following album, Wilder Mind, in 2015. Offering a fully plugged-in, more straight-forward rock vibe, the record was seen by many as an effort to spice things up and escape its folksy identity. Pitchfork gave the album a dismal review, rating it 2 out of a possible 10, but mixed critical assessments didn't keep throngs from gobbling it up. Wilder Mind debuted at No. 1 in a number of countries, including the U.S., and the group's crowds on that tour, including its last stop in Dallas in 2016, were as swarming and fervent as ever.

Released near the end of 2018, the band's latest album, Delta, does offer a bit of an experimental feel, though a hearty bit of the acoustic vibes that were so prevalent early in the group's career made its return. Although critics were again a little less than enthused with the effort, audiences again proved to not care much about that, as Delta topped the American album charts upon its release, and the concerts on this tour have hosted the same massive crowds that have been following for almost a decade now.
