It's last call for Denton music venue Rockin Rodeo, closing soon

If you're a country music fan living anywhere near Denton, there's a good chance you've boot-scooted across the dance floor at Rockin Rodeo. And if you're craving one last spin, better make it quick: The honky tonk and live music venue closes on April 14.

Owner Lloyd Banks took to Facebook on Feb. 24 to announce his landlord had sold the building and it is expected to be torn down.

"After 13 years, Rockin Rodeo in Denton has to say goodbye," Banks said in a video.

According to the Denton Record Chronicle, the fate of the Carriage Square Shopping Center where the bar resides is still unknown; however, some have speculated the University of North Texas may have an interest in developing the property. Most of the tenants there have closed, the pub reports.

Rockin Rodeo joins a growing list of music venues to close recently in the college town. Stalwart club Hailey's shuttered in 2015, followed by Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios in 2016. Mable Peabody's Beauty Parlor and Chainsaw Repair, Denton's only gay bar, closed in late 2017 after a nearly 40-year run.

"From a guy who went to college here a million years ago and walked into a great live music scene and watched it even get better, I feel sorry for everybody right now," Banks told the DRC. "For whatever reason, Denton does not support live music like it used to and that's why it's going away."

Rockin Rodeo plans to go out with a bang. The venue is open Thursday through Saturday and expects to live music every night until April 14. See the calendar here.
