David Byrne, a hero to brilliant weirdos everywhere, adds a second upcoming show in D-FW

Days after hinting at a forthcoming new solo album, rock pioneer David Byrne has come to his senses and announced tour dates in support of American Utopia. The album will be released on March 9 and is Byrne's 11th solo album.

The world tour includes more than 80 stops in the United States, South America and Europe. In Dallas, Winspear Opera House must be the place. Tickets for that April 24 concert quickly sold out.

Update: March 14, 2018: Byrne announced today his American Utopia world tour will make a second stop in North Texas, this time at Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie on Oct. 6. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday, March 16 at 10 a.m.

Kicking off in March, the tour's first six stops are already sold out; that means time is likely of the essence for the Dallas gig, too. Performances will include new material as well as Talking Heads classics, according to a statement.

Backed by a 12-piece band, Byrne has described the tour's choreography as "the most ambitious show I've done since the shows that were filmed for Stop Making Sense," the statement says. Directed by Oscar-winner Jonathan Demme, who died in 2017, that critically lauded feature-length concert film won the National Society of Film Critics award for best documentary in 1984.

Uberfan tip: Check out Byrne's analysis of Stop Making Sense, including his hand-drawn diagrams, in his brilliant, obsessive semi-memoir How Music Works. For local flavor, see also: True Stories, the 1986 film Byrne directed and starred in. Set in a fictional Texas town, it was shot in Allen, McKinney, Mesquite, Red Oak and in Dallas at NorthPark Center.

Byrne has other roots here, as he collaborated with Dallas-raised St. Vincent in 2012.

Can't wait for the show? Last week, Byrne released the first single from American Utopia, co-written with rock legend Brian Eno

You can pre-order American Utopia on iTunes or the Nonesuch store -- the latter of which includes an "exclusive print facsimile of an early handwritten lyric sheet to the song," the statement says.
