"This is one of the hardest decisions we have ever had to make," the website says. "Due to several recent roadblocks outside of our control and in an effort to do right by our fans, the decision to cancel the event was our only real option."

According to the Austin Chronicle, an unidentified investor "got cold feet" and the team wasn't able to find a new financial backer in the short five weeks before the fest. The article also notes that after the botched Fyre Festival -- and we could mention Dallas' confused Starfest festival -- artists are now asking to be paid more in advance.

Anyone who bought a physical ticket instead of buying via Eventbrite online should email info@soundonsoundfest.com for refunds. Those refunds ring up to $189 per person for a three-day pass, $379 for VIP.

The festival, while destined to be popular with Austinites, was also a draw for road-tripping Dallasites, because it was going to offer a roundtrip shuttle from Deep Ellum to the concert location in McDade, Texas.

The fest lineup was eclectic and dramatic: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Iggy Pop, the Shins, Grizzly Bear and more. As our music critic Kelly Dearmore explained it when Sound On Sound artists were announced in June 2017, "Sound on Sound's lineup features a range of extremes: the bleakest black metal, the most daring experimental hip-hop and electronic, and the most precious indie sounds, all on one poster." Dallas-area thrash band Power Trip and hip-hop artist Sam Lao were slated to be at the fest, as was DJ Sober.

The festival says they would like to reschedule "the majority of the artists ... at other venues in the area." News on which bands will perform, and where, is expected to land on Monday, Oct. 16, and the statement from Sound On Sound says former festival ticketholders will get first dibs for rescheduled shows.

"We appreciate you sticking by us while we work hard to make this right," the statement says.
