Woodrow Wilson alum Steve Miller will join the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016

Steve Miller's guitar-hero and '70s-staple status have already afforded him induction into the hall of fame for his alma mater, Dallas' Woodrow Wilson High School. Next stop? The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

That's right; the 72-year-old Miller made the final cut of five artists who will be inducted into the Rock Hall next April. The induction ceremony, which moves to Brooklyn's Barclays Center, will also honor rap legends NWA and Miller's contemporaries Cheap Trick, Chicago and Deep Purple.

Miller -- who rose to fame in San Francisco but cut his blues-rock teeth here in Dallas while attending both St. Mark's and Woodrow -- made the final cut after landing on a shortlist of names including Los Lobos, Nine Inch Nails and Janet Jackson.

Apart from the inclusion of NWA in the 2016 class (after a year that saw a wildly popular biopic for the group hit theaters), the focus is on crowd-pleasing '70s rock this time around. Perhaps worthwhile shortlisters Jackson and Chic will have better luck next round.

This will be North Texas' second year in a row to see a musician with local ties get the full Rock Hall celebration. Last year Stevie Ray Vaughan was inducted with the help of his brother, Jimmie.

Jimmie Vaughan also has ties to Miller and helped the Steve Miller Band frontman give a nod to Dallas at a Verizon Theatre show back in June.

According to Thor Christensen's review of that show, Miller "talked about growing up in Dallas, studying at St. Mark's prep school during the day and lining up gigs for $75 a night before he was old enough to drive: 'Mom! I've got a job Friday night! You gotta drive me to work!'"

As part of his joining the Rock Hall's 2016 class, Miller's life and music will be the subject of a special exhibit at the hall's museum in Cleveland.

Miller and other Rock Hall inductees granted post-announcement interviews to Rolling Stone magazine, which is heavily involved in the fan voting component to the hall's selection process.

"I haven't really spent a lot of time thinking about my acceptance speech," Miller told the mag. "But it's exciting and really nice for my audience and people that are really concerned about it."

Below, catch a couple of the Steve Miller Band's greatest hits, but start with an interview Miller granted Austin City Limits before he taped an episode of the show a few years ago. In the chat he shares some of his stories about learning blues-rock and other styles in Dallas, attending shows at some storied venues here and playing fraternity parties with his early band.
