Concert news: Kendrick Lamar will play South Side Music Hall in late October

Dallas fans no doubt crossed their fingers pretty hard yesterday when the man behind one of 2015's finest albums, Kendrick Lamar, announced that he'd embark on an 8-city live jaunt later this month. Would Dallas be included in his mini trek?

Well, turns out that we're indeed among the lucky cities to get what's being billed as the "Kunta's Groove Sessions" tour — Lamar will preside over an evening of hip-hop with backing band the Wesley Theory and opening act Jay Rock on Oct. 29 at South Side Music Hall.

Earlier this year, Lamar released his sophomore LP, To Pimp a Butterfly, and quickly mesmerized listeners of all tastes with the rap-R&B-jazz-protest opus. It's one of the few full-length records from this year that I regularly listen to from start to finish. Ear-pleasing and thought provoking at once.

Really, it wouldn't be right to simply pull up "King Kunta" without letting the meditation of "Institutionalized" follow it, without leaning in later for the beautiful optimism of "Alright," without returning to the defiant truths of "The Blacker the Berry," without hearing that spoken-word poem unfurl throughout the record, and so on.

If you haven't given yourself this listening experience yet, get thee to a streamin' machine now -- you have few excuses left. Don't forget about the equally compelling first album, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City.
