Spend hours with Edie Brickell, the New Bos and the groovy sound of Deep Ellum in 1991

Well, this is one hell of a flashback -- Deep Ellum in February 1991, when the neighborhood was covered in grunge and groove. You may need the weekend to recover. Or at least wash the patchouli and cigarette smoke out of your clothes.

Vimeo user Baadoomppp posted this epic-length home movie to Vimeo overnight. It's billed as "Edie Brickell and New Bohemians at Club Dada and Trees -- Dallas, TX 1991." But it's so much more: For instance, in the early footage, before Edie climbs the Dada stage, that's Cafe Noir's Gale Hess on violin for the "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" psychedelic freak-out. (Has it really been three years?) And I completely forgot Kenny Withrow's used-to-be turn at the mic singing Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love."

It's possible this footage has been floating around for a while; some of it seems familiar. Maybe because I was there, at least for some of it. But I don't remember ever seeing a video with Gale and the New Bos. I did a cursory dig for it on YouTube and came up with this:

News Roundups

Catch up on the day's news you need to know.

Or with:

Longer set; different show; well shot. But, hey, we could do this all day. This rabbit hole is wide and deep and always tempting. But we won't. Instead, I direct your attention to this estimable archive of New Bos material dating back to the late 1980s. Meanwhile, Edie's working on a musical with Steve Martin.

Bonus: Edie Brickell and New Bohemians on Late Night with David Letterman in 1998. Come for the performance; stay for the interview.
