Catch these scary movies on the big screen this month in Dallas

October is ripe for film series. The weather is iffy and when it gets too hot, too cold or too wet, a movie theater can be a blessed respite. This month's programming is perfect for those discerning moviegoers who like thrills and chills. Ready, set ... Halloween.

'Hitchcocktober'

Movies from the catalog of Alfred Hitchcock, "the master of suspense," will screen this month at the Angelika Film Center in both Dallas (5321 E. Mockingbird Lane inside Mockingbird Station) and Plano (7205 Bishop Road inside the Shops at Legacy) during Hitchcocktober. The series screens a film every Thursday night at 7, starting Oct. 4 with Rear Window. Other films include Shadow of a Doubt (Oct. 11); Strangers on a Train (Oct. 18); and 39 Steps (Oct. 25). There will be a special screening of Psycho (1960, R, 109 mins.) on Wednesday, Oct. 31, Halloween, at 7. Tickets are $12.

Ultimate Classics

The Tuesday Night Classics schedule in October is always filled with thrilling chillers. This year is no different at Harkins Theatres in Southlake (1450 Plaza Place). The series screens films every Tuesday at 7 p.m. through Oct. 30 for only $5. Films include Aliens (Oct. 9); a 40th-anniversary screening of Halloween (Oct. 16); The Shining (Oct. 23); and A Nightmare on Elm Street (Oct. 30).

Don't forget the Alamo

Along with a slew of horror classics and some restorations, The Alamo Drafthouse also has a series called "Dismember the Alamo." (Also "The Horror of John Carpenter" and "Universal Monster Matinees Series" and "Hammer Horror Series.") But while the others are one-offs, the Alamo amps up the adrenaline with a marathon of horror movies. The funs starts at noon on Saturday, Oct. 27, as the Alamo Richardson (100 S. Central Expressway) rolls out a collection of movies (R, 550 mins.) from the American Genre Film Archive. Tickets are $27.06.
