It's only the middle of April, but several films have already dazzled me in various ways. This is always a good sign, especially given the industry's habit of back-loading "important" movies toward the end of the year.
Also: Humans love lists.
So with all of this in mind I present my Ridiculously Early, Undeniably Premature List of the Top 5 Movies of 2018 So Far.5. Annihilation — Like the top movie on this listicle, Alex Garland's slow-burn sci-fi thriller knows that the cinematic experience is more important than a neatly bowed plot.
4. Black Panther — The consciousness-raising, trailblazing superhero movie that happens to be immensely entertaining.
3. The Death of Stalin — Political satire applied with a sharp sickle, courtesy of the fearless Armando Iannucci.
2. Foxtrot — The absurdity of war and the endurance of grief take center stage in this finely chiseled Israeli drama.
1. You Were Never Really Here — A bracing shot of pure cinematic brio without an ounce of fat on its beautifully scarred body.
